I really like having prefold diapers around to pad my stash. They come in handy for all kinds of things, and they are cheap cheap cheap! A dozen prefolds and a few diaper covers can really save you in an emergency, as I’m sure we’ve all experienced!
Lately I’ve been in serious stashing mode, with the arrival of my new squishy face just weeks away! I have DIAPER FEVER, majorly. And because Lee is only 16 months old, I remember vividly just how often those little new babies need to be changed. TONS.
When Lee was born I was convinced a certain “hybrid” system was for me. Until I realized it couldn’t contain the gallons of pee coming out of my new baby boy. I ditched the inserts that came with the system in favor of prefold diapers, and just trifolded them into the cover.
But you know what? Trifolding these prefold diapers makes for a very bulky diaper! I have been simplifying my stash and using mostly prefolds or inserts and covers lately, and the bulk is the only thing I can’t get past. I LOVE how simple changes are, I really love how simple laundry is, and I love how cheap you can build a stash with a system like this. But, ugh, the bulk!
So I decided to give my prefolds a makeover, and with a few steps made a dozen contour diapers without spending a single red cent. My husband is so proud!
So, without further adeiu, here is how I turned my bulky prefold diapers into super awesome comfortable for baby trim on the booty contour diapers!
First, gather your supplies:
- any brand of PREPPED and ready to wear prefold diapers you like: I practiced on my old crusty Bumkins before moving on to my nice flip Organics
- a pocket diaper or diaper pattern for a template
- pen or fabric marker
- SHARP scissors, full size and a smaller pair for the detail work
- a serger or sewing machine
- sewing supplies like thread, seam ripper, etc
I would say this project is not for super beginners, only because of the last step. But look it over and see if it looks like something you can do, and practice if you need to!
Using your readymade diaper as a template, lay on top of the prefold. You can see I made a few marks before deciding which curve I liked better. I’m not too worried about it since it will just end up covering a booty! Keep in mind that the “negative” space made by the curve will fold in to be your soaker.
Cut along the curves you drew until you reach the center, padded part of the diaper. You don’t want to cut the wings completely off, let’s leave them attached so they just fold in.
Here’s what they’ll look like folded in, and on top of yet another prefold.
I made a couple dozen at once to get it all done, so before I did any sewing I used one as a pattern to trace on to all the others. If you just want to do one or two to practice, you’re smart! I played with a few before I found what I wanted.
Using your small, sharp scissors, cut a little teardrop shape into the soaker where the cut ends. This just makes it easier to serge the edges. If you prefer to use a zigzag stitch to secure the edges, you can probably skip this step since it’s much easier to sew around curves with a regular machine.
Just a quick shot of the whole batch here at the machine!
And a close up of the finished cut
Trim all your threads, fold your wings in, and you’re ready to diaper!
Here’s the action shot:
You can see just how trim the diaper under the cover really is, it might even be skinnier than a pocket or a lay-in hemp soaker!
I am super thrilled with my new contours, and making them out of my prefolds made them CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP! I think I’ll even buy a dozen newborn size prefolds to convert so I have these on hand for the little lady!
And- performance is not an issue with these babies! We normally use a flip Organic folded into a cover overnight, with a Thirsties velour doubler as insurance. The contour held up just as well, and I suspect it was much more comfortable to wear. I am hooked!
